This Israeli Child Isn’t Looking Forward to Passover

Jacob’s sixth-grade classmates kept eyeing the clock, counting down the hours and the minutes until the final bell rang. The sound that would announce the start of Passover vacation.

The biblical holiday of Passover, commemorating the Israelites miraculous exodus from ancient Egypt, was starting in a few days. All the kids were excited about what the upcoming festive holiday meant to them: a vacation from school, festive ritual meals with family and friends, new clothes, presents, and trips!

All the boys except for Jacob. Jacob too was glancing at the clock. However, unlike his eager classmates, Jacob wished the clock was moving backward instead of forward.

Children in Israel – the Unfortunate Reality

At ten o’clock, Adi instructed all the children in her Jerusalem gan (kindergarten) to take out their aruchat eser (mid-morning meal). Hungry, all the children raced to unzip their tiks (backpacks), remove their lunches and begin eating. All the children, that is, except for Benny.

“At the beginning of the year, I noticed that Benny often came to gan without food. One morning, I asked him if he forgot his food at home. His response broke my heart. “We have no food at home, my belly is empty, and I haven’t eaten anything since the slice of bread you gave me yesterday.”

That night, Adi made a call to Meir Panim and arranged for Benny and his siblings to receive daily hot lunches, free of charge.

Unfortunately, Benny is not the only four year old in Israel that leaves for school without lunch and goes to bed hungry.

Warm Soup for Young and Old. Rich and Poor

With weather reports predicting colder than usual temperatures for the following day in Jerusalem, the staff at Meir Panim‘s Jerusalem Restaurant Style Soup Kitchen anticipated an influx of visitors.

Frigid days, a challenge for everyone was especially taxing on impoverished elderly. Extra pots of warm soup were cooked,  as well as the recruitment of warm volunteers.
