Student Films: The Israeli Competition Program

I had the pleasure of viewing 5 of the 23 creations of male and female students from film schools all over the country. Each represents a personal point of view, an original story, an exposed truth evoking a rolling laugh or tear in the corner of the eye. Provides a glimpse into the inner world of the creators and the feeling of the new spirit of Israeli cinema.

How Do You Direct a Sex Scene?

Featuring a panel discussion by Directors Hagai Levi, Hagar Ben-Asher, and Intimacy Coordinator Erga Yaari.

How do you direct a sex scene? This is something I want to know.

A course not taught at my religious film school. When I read about it on Facebook, I set my Waze and headed to the TLV Cinematheque.

The packed theater and I were not disappointed. We learned that YES actors signed. YES, they agreed to everything. YES. YES. YES.

AND

We as filmmakers still have a responsibility

How can we create a safe environment?
1. closed sets
2. close extra monitors
3. write down specific choreography per beat of the scene
4. talk to your actors – use language such as “are you okay” or “does this feel right” and if they say no – stop.

That’s your job as a filmmaker — to listen. And then to problem solve. The inexperienced director believes that there will be no problems on set. And that everything will go according to plan. That everything will match her vision. The experienced director knows that there will be challenges – good moments that were unexpected as well as the bad. A professional director is a problem solver, a communicator, and most importantly, a leader.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best.

And

Excited and inspired! Safe sets with intimacy coordinators – like Erga Yaari.

Yaari explained that she sees her position on set as the mediator – the one that knows what the director wants – feels – envisions – and what the actors wish to – feel – envision. Sometimes, the male actor has terrible breath, making it uncomfortable for the actress to kiss him. Other times, the actor has never done what is typed in the script. The intimacy coordinator is a collaborator in the artistic process – the one that knows what is going too far — and what can go further.

I look forward to working with Erga Yaari, and other intimacy coordinators, on future productions.

Masterclass

with Mia Hansen-Love

One of contemporary French Cinema’s most prominent voices, Mia Hansen-Love, strives for authenticity in her intrinsically humanistic films.

Over Corona, I had the opportunity to watch Bergman Island and was intrigued by the simplicity, the beauty, the humanity, the mystery, and the scenery. So I was very interested in hearing from the director. Mia Hansen-Love did not disappoint. She discussed her methods, from writing in French – to working with actors on making the dialogue sound natural and authentic – rolling off their tongues. I was intrigued by her description of pre-production acting out the different parts while plotting camera movements.

On my list — more of Mia Hansen-Love’s movies.

with Joey Soloway

I really – really wanted to hear Joey Soloway — the timing an hour and a half before Shabbat would be cutting it too close? Do I still have time? Today at 4:30 pm.

Looking forward to next year!

Special thanks to the festival team, for inviting us to take part in the rich and varied cinematic experience.

That’s a wrap!

Watched and chatted with Yael Bartana about her newest work Two Minutes to Midnight.

Learned the secrets of documentary and the breakdown of the fourth wall from Director Marc Isaacs. Check out his latest film – The Filmaker’s House.

Director Marc Isaacs

Enjoyed a delicious bacon cheeseburger Bodega מטבח אמריקאי.

AND rose to my feet, along with the entire room, in recognition for the vulnerability, authenticity and talent of Director Shir Newman at the World Premiere of her new documentary HOW TO SAY SILENCE.Now – my throat is constructed. My eyes are filling up with tears. What courage to share your story with all of us.

Yom HaShoah at the US Embassy in Israel

April 12, 2018 by Yocheved Feinerman 1 Comment

The Yom Hashoah siren was set to sound in Israel, as we waited patiently to process our children’s passports at the United States Embassy, in Tel Aviv.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the crucial place of passports, visas, and bureaucracy during the horrific years of the Shoah.

My husband’s grandparent, the Strobel’s and Weingarten’s, entire families that endured the atrocities of the Shoah.

Family members that could have been saved with a visa or passport.

I had new found respect for our American grandparents, that tirelessly worked to provide  United States visas and passports to their brethren, European Jewry.

United States passports because there was no possibility of obtaining Israeli passports.

The Siren

Shortly before 10 am, an announcement was made by the US Embassy clerk.

In eight minutes the Yom Hazikron siren would sound. People were invited to exit the building and go outside for the siren. Only after the completion of the siren would the passport service continue.

Following his instructions, I quickly exited the building and waited for the siren on the balcony of the US Embassy, in Tel Aviv, Israel.

I stood facing the Tel Aviv shoreline, as the siren sounded.

Looking deep into the ocean, it hit me. These waters, the shores of Zion, was the utopian shoreline dreamed about by our people for thousands of years.

Shores that are our reality.

With our Israeli flag waving tall above the waves.

Israeli Flag Waving on the Tel Aviv Shore

Approaching next weeks 70th Yom Haatzmaut celebration, I understand that we are not living in “utopia”. However, our reality is clearly a blessing and a miracle.

We are raising our children in an environment that values commitment, dedication, and strength. As proud Israeli citizens, we are alive and recognize the bountiful gifts that we have been bestowed with.

The beauty of our independent waters.

Am Yisrael Chai.

US Embassy in the Rebuilt Jerusalem

These are unbelievable times.

The prayer and prophecy of L’shana Habah B’Yerushalayim Habenuyah continue to be fulfilled.

Our children’s United States passports will be renewed at the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.Hakarat Hatov to the United States administration and our current United States Ambassador to Israel Ambassador David Friedman.

Dreaming of the Third and Final Picture

Last night, on Yom HaShoah, tears, flowed, as I scrolled through photos, messages, and stories of personal heartache that were featured on my Facebook NewsFeed.

It was this picture that I saw and shared.

(If it is your picture, I would love to give you a photographer’s credit- please contact me :).

Past and Present and Future

Like the women in the picture,

I pray. I dream. I yearn.

I continue to believe and hope in a better, more utopian society.

The society that will be photographed in a third and final picture.

A picture of our daughters, high energy women, singing together.

עשה שלום במרומיו הוא יעשה שלום עלינו ועל כל ישראל
