A mother and daughter visit a military cemetery on the eve of the daughter’s enlistment, navigating grief and separation through conflicting rituals of mourning.
Synopsis
On the day before her enlistment, a daughter travels with her mother to visit her father’s grave.
They walk through the military cemetery together. The mother stops at the headstone. She arranges stones. She lights a candle. She begins a prayer.
The daughter sits nearby. She gathers small rocks from the ground. She stacks them. She knocks them over.
The mother waits for her to join. The daughter does not.
Time passes. The mother continues the rituals she knows. The daughter keeps her hands busy. Neither speaks.
The mother adjusts the stones again. She looks at the daughter. She looks away.
The daughter keeps stacking.
Eventually, the mother stops praying. She gathers her things and offers the prayer book to her daughter. The daughter does not take it.
The mother lights the candle. The daughter steadies it.
The mother steps back and waits.
The daughter knocks the stones over. She rises.
They walk back through the cemetery together.
